Manning Bar/House.
I knew watching Theatresports at Manning Bar religiously every Thursday would pay off. I'm now the holder of two tickets to the USyd Arts Revue, The Planet of the Arts, which starts in about two weeks.
We resumed that other great Thursday ritual at Manning House (albeit only in my circle of uni friends), the communal hashbrown breakfast, after a week off due to Pat's surgery (on his goolies, I might add). The whole lot of us just annexe a couple of the window couches and send a sole operative up to the counter. Every week, without fail, we order a couple of dozen hashbrowns, and no matter how much or how little an individual chips in, everybody gets an equal share of the hashbrowns. We still have to wait while the ladies at the counter fry them up, though. You'd think that after weeks and weeks of this ritual, they'd wise up and have the potato cakes of joy ready to fill our tummies. Ah well.
But not long beforehand, possibly around nine hours earlier, a young man had passed away just up the stairs, on Manning Bar's balcony. Just after USyd's queer party for Sexuality Week, inVersion, and after the straight college kids on campus had more or less taken over, a young life was extinguished. They say it was a heart attack. At the time I thought he was just a random passed-out drunk. Evidently it was a lot more serious than that. Tragic.
