Polls have opened for Triple J's Hottest 100 and will stay open until January 21st. And speaking of Triple J, this year marks thirty years since the inception of 2JJ in 1975 (which became JJJ in 1980 when the station moved from Sydney AM band to FM).

A product of progressive media policies of the [great] Whitlam Government, the national youth radio station Triple J in my view is quite possibly the best radio station in Australia if not the world. It's the subject of much derision amongst my friends but I really couldn't care less.

Triple J has been a force in comedy, music, politics and current affairs in this country, which is much more than I can say for many of the FM commercial stations. And the irony is that several of the acts that my friends enjoy were given their berth in Australia by the Jay's, when the commercial stations that they listen to weren't game enough to play anything new. And that continues today, with JJJ taking the risks with new artists and the commercial stations picking them up after they've proved their worth.

Anyway, back to the Hottest 100. Some of my picks:
  1. coin-operated boy - the dresden dolls
  2. forget her - jeff buckley
  3. godhopping - dogs die in hot cars
  4. going nowhere - cut copy
  5. hold me now - polyphonic spree
  6. i love you cause i have to - dogs die in hot cars
  7. mirror mirror - after the fall
  8. older than you - eskimo joe
  9. over when i met you - the camels
