The expedition to UTS Kuring-gai.
I tagged along to Mattymoo's enrolment day at the University of Technology Sydney's Kuring-gai campus (in Sydney's north) today, which was actually pretty fun. He gave me the grand tour and I've got to say, I had the place all wrong. It's really quite pleasant (it reminded me a little bit of Auckland International Airport, although not as big and lacking in duty-free shops); the notion I'd had of the place beforehand was of a boring little building in the middle of nowhere.
Matt took me to a spot commonly frequented by smokers, a large outside balcony with benches and shade umbrellas. It had a great view over the Blue Gum Creek valley in the Lane Cove National Park. So we sat there, enjoying each other's company and listening to some music for a while. For that short hour, I took on the role as DJ Mikey, fiddling around with his mp3 player.
We felt so old, though. Matt and I, of course, are old hands at this. I'm going into my second year, and Matt's just transferred from a B.Ed to a Bachelor of Business, starting from the very beginning again. Everyone else enrolling today were recent school leavers - naive and wide-eyed I imagine, experiencing the wonderful new world of university for the first time. Okay, well maybe not like that, but fresh meat nonetheless.
Speaking of fresh meat, we kept running into/walking past this rather cute crumpet, a uni-newbie, whom the two of us referred to as White-Polo-Lauren-shirt-boy. Lé gaydar perked up almost immediately. Matt wanted me to squeeze a phone number out of him, but I didn't get around to it. White-Polo-Lauren-shirt-boy didn't sound like Matt's type, anyway - a little unintentional eavesdropping revealed that he regularly appeared in stage musicals. Not that it's a bad thing, I happen to like some stage musicals (how stereotypically gay!) but I don't think that it's Matt's thing.
Maybe, just maybe, if White-Polo-Lauren-shirt-boy was a member of the band Linkin Park - that'd be Matt's thing. How stereotypically not gay. Aww, bless'im. Not that there'd ever be a rockboy as pretty as this one anyway.
Also, now I've got a photo of Mattymoo in my wallet. Well, in the form of his old UTS student card anyway.
